So I've just listened to the album and it's very simple to put this: FUCKING AMAZING.
2008 is an extremely good year for albums alongside with Metallica and Underoaths new albums that have already come out and a few more by fall, this album is a mix of The Crusade and Ascendancy, which makes it insta-win, stumps the Slipknot album to the ground IMO.

Since the release of 'Ascendancy' in 05, Trivium have managed to win over legions of younger fans, while managing to alienate the older guard with their blatant, at times annoying, attempt to be the new Metallica. However, on 'Shogun' they've finally written a collection of songs that a group of their world-straddling stature deserve. Gone are the terrible 'us versus them' lyrics that buried 'Anthem (We Are The Fire)' and though the Metallica influences are still abound ('Insurrection', 'Kirisute Gomen') they're used in a more complimenting way. In with this there's the occasional black metal texture, classical metal approach and plenty of melody, especially in Heafy's layered chorus vocals ('Torn Between Scylla And Charybdis', 'The Calamity'). A few lacklustre moments like 'Into The Mouth Of Hell We March' and the terrible 'Boat! Rudder!' shouted vocals during 'Down From The Sky' do dull the shine a little, but this is a band finally living up to the hype, which even the strongest negative voice will find difficult to bury fairly. Surely some of this new found maturity lies with producer Nick Raskulinecz (Foo Fighters, Stone Sour, Death Angel), but who knows? 'Shogun' could see them bridging that divide between supporters and detractors.
