History

The Marlin Model 99 was developed in 1959 by Ewald Nichol.Internally, it was essentially what would become the Model 60 in1960. However, major differences were visible from the exterior, too. The Model 99 featured a walnut stock, and the receiver, instead of being grooved for tip-off scope mounts like the Model 60would be, was factory-tapped to accept screw-on scope mounts. TheModel 99 did not have a bolt hold-open device. The Model 99 wasoffered from 1959 through 1961; a lower priced version, Model 99G,was offered under Marlin's Glenfield line.

The Marlin Model 60 was developed in 1960 from the Model 99design. The primary difference was that the stock was of birchinstead of walnut, to reduce the recurring production cost. Itstube magazine was a significant innovation at the time for asemi-automatic .22 rifle, as it featured a brass inner magazinetube. This, instead of the steel tubes often seen on earlier .22rifles, completely eliminated the rust problems that all-steelmagazines had experienced. The Model 60 additionally featured a16-groove rifled barrel, in Marlin's trademarked Micro-Grooverifling. This rifling, with its precision-crowned muzzle, gave theModel 60 an enhanced accuracy over competing rifles usingtraditional deep grooved rifling, as the bullet was not as severelydeformed while traveling down the barrel as with competing .22 LRrifles.

The Model 60 has a manual bolt hold-open, activated by pushingthe charging handle inward towards the gun when it is in thefully-retracted, open breech position. To close the bolt with themanual bolt hold-open engaged, the charging handle must be pulledout, away from the gun, before the bolt will go forward. Since1985, the Model 60 has also included a patented automatic'last-shot' bolt hold-open. This latter feature is a safety featurethat locks the bolt half-way open after the last cartridge isfired, thereby allowing the safe inspection of the now-open action. This also notifies the user when the gun is empty.

Marlin Model 60 with after-market stock.

During the mid-1980s, the capacity of the rifle was reduced to a15 round maximum limit, to meet New Jersey's firearms law forsemi-automatic assault weapons. The redesigned magazine tube wasvisibly shorter than the barrel, which is how rifles from thisperiod can be easily identified. Then in the early 2000s, thelength of the barrel was reduced from 22 to 19 inches (559 to 483mm), to match the length of the reduced length magazine. This hadthe effect of reducing the length of the rifle from 40.5 to 37.5inches (1029 to 953 mm). (The photo above is of the 40.5 inch (1029mm) version, the rifle having been manufactured in 1982.) Tubemagazine fed .22 LR rifles were never subject to the 10 round limitof the federalassault weapons ban. Marlin made export models of differentcapacities to comply with foreign firearms regulations.

Despite slight design changes since 1960, there is generalbackwards compatibility of nearly all internal parts.

Features

Two Marlin Model 60s. Top: older 18 round model. Bottom: 15-roundmodel with aftermarket scope (and magazine tube that is visiblyshorter than the barrel). Note: the bolt stays open on the 15-roundmodel after the last round is fired, but does not on the 18-roundmodel. The 15 round model has a third screw slightly behind thetrigger guard to reinforce the stock, which the old model lacks.Different wood is used for the stock itself.

The action design is a self-loading, straight blowbackoperation, with right-side ejection. The receiver top has aserrated, non-glare finish. The receiver is held in the stock byfront and rear machine screws through forearm and the trigger guardrespectively (later models add a wood screw behind the triggerguard to reinforce the wrist of the stock). The receiver is groovedfor a scope mount. For use without a scope, the barrel features anadjustable open rear sight and a ramp front sight. The charginghandle is used to load the first round from the magazine and can beretracted and pushed in as a manual bolt hold-open feature. Currentmodel has an automatic 'last-shot' bolt hold-open device with anexternal lever in the front of the trigger guard to release thebolt. Earliest Model 60s did not have a bolt hold-open; first themanual, then in the mid-1980s the automatic 'last shot' hold-openwere added. The rifle has an easily accessible cross-bolt safetylocated above the trigger. When disassembled, the trigger guardwith trigger and safety remains in the stock.

Marlin uses their proprietary Micro-Groove rifling in the Model60. The twist rate is 1:16 inches, right-hand. Micro-Groove riflinguses 16 small lands and grooves rather than 4, 6 or 8 deepergrooves used in most rifles. This increases the accuracy of therifle by lessening deformation of fired bullets traveling down thebarrel. Although the Model 60 is one of the least expensive .22semi-automatic rifles sold, it has the reputation of being one ofthe most accurate examples in production.

Unlike some competing .22 semi-automatic rifles, such as the Ruger 10/22, there arerelatively few aftermarket accessories sold for the utilitarianModel 60. Despite this, it has been sold in over thirty-fivevariants, and is one of the fastest-selling rifles ever.[3]

(While earlier .22 semi-automatic rifles were often designed tofunction with .22 Short,.22 Long and .22 Long Rifleinterchangeably, the Model 60 is optimized for the .22 Long Riflecartridge only.)

Uses

The Model 60 is well-suited for small-game hunting and vermincontrol, as well as for serious but low-cost target practice whilepreparing for hunting with larger rifles. Its relative largeammunition capacity is adequate for casual recreational targetshooting ('plinking'). Its low cost and ease of handling makes itwell-suited as a first rifle by young hunters just learning to usea semi-automatic rifle.

Versions and year ofmanufacture

The Model 60 is currently available in 6 distinct versions:

  • Model 60, the basic rifle (shown in picture)
  • Model 60C, the basic rifle in a camouflage version
  • Model 60SN, the basic rifle with a black fiberglass stock
  • Model 60SB, the rifle in a weather-proof stainless steelversion
  • Model 60SS, the rifle in a nickel-plated, stainless steelversion with a grey/black laminate stock
  • Model 60S-CF, the rifle in a nickel-plated, stainless steelversion, with a black carbon-fiber-patterned stock

Historically, there were also other versions that were sold:

  • Marlin Model 99 and 99DL - this was the first version of theModel 60, offered in a walnut stock, 1959 to 1961
  • Model 99M1 - styled to resemble the US Army M1 carbine, witheighteen inch barrel, handguard, barrel band, nine shot magazineeven with the end of the stock, and receiver sight mounted on thescope grooves.
  • Model 99M2 - styled like the 99M1, but with a boxmagazine.
  • Glenfield Model 99G - precursor of the Model 60G.
  • Glenfield Model 60G - this was the name used on Marlin-madeModel 60 guns intended for sale to mass-merchandisers, 1960 to1965, with a birch stock instead of walnut
  • Glenfield Model 60 - one of the Model 60 versions manufacturedfrom 1966 to 1982
  • Glenfield Model 65 - manufactured in 1968; it was essentiallyidentical to the Model 60 with the exception of a brass exteriormagazine tube; it was made for Oklahoma Tire & Supply Co.
  • Model 60DL, the basic rifle in a Monte Carlo walnut stock
  • Model 60SSK, the rifle in a nickel-plated, stainless steelversion, with black fiberglass stock

Other private-label versions were manufactured for MontgomeryWard, Coast to Coast Stores, Western Auto Stores and Cotter &Company.

The Revelation model 120 was manufactured for Western AutoSupply and is nearly identical to the first variant of the model60, but also looks like a model 99. Many Revelation 120s weremanufactured and sold without serial numbers until the use ofserial numbers on firearms was made mandatory in 1968. TheRevelation 120 has a different front sight (a brass dot as opposedto the model 60's hooded front sight) and the barrel is stampedWESTERN AUTO SUPPLY CO.

On Marlin-branded Model 60 rifles, the first two digits of theserial number indicate the year of manufacture. For example, on therifle shown in the photo above, the serial number starts with 18...The 18 is significant, for subtracting it from 2000 gives the dateof manufacture for the rifle, 1982. Likewise, a serial numberstarting with 17 would be a rifle manufactured in 1983.

This method has not been uniformly followed. It is valid onlyfrom 1971 through 1999. Prior to 1971, the first two digitsindicated the year of manufacture. For example, a rifle with aserial number starting with 70... would have been made in 1970.Starting in 2000, this same old method has returned; the first twodigits once more indicate the year of manufacture directly, with nosubtraction required. [2]

Recently it seems Marlin has changed their methods once again asone example purchased new in 2006 has a serial number starting with94, the exact way to find the date seems unclear, though it ispossible they are using a 'subtract from 2100' method.
