Best basketball documentaries [r/nba edition]

All right. It's the holiday season so some of you probably have time off to watch some good movies/documentaries - a lot of y'all probably have time regardless ;)

Anyways I wanted to contribute somehow to /r/nba and since the 'best podcast post' already's made, I thought i might wanna do this one. The titles are in random order and linked to their IMDb pages. I've also linked each title to a youtube trailer. But these are probably my 20 favorite basketball documentaries.

• This documentary follows the rivalry between NBA superstars Larry Bird and Magic Johnsons, from the early days of their career up through the present day friendship. Definitely one of my favorites. A real man cries to this one.

• This documentary takes us through the rivalry between the Pacers and the Knicks, as seen through the eyes of Reggie Miller, no pun intended. We're seeing the impact of Indiana Pacer Reggie Miller on the New York Knicks in the 1990s, specifically focusing on the Pacers/Knicks battles in the 1994 and 1995 NBA Playoffs and on Miller's interaction with Knicks fan Spike Lee.

• This is the story about LeBron James and his four teammates at high school, and gives us a unique glimpse of what goes through the head of a future hall of famer, as a teenager. The documentary gives us a look at the trials and tribulations of LeBron James and his family, his teammates and how a high school basketball team in Akron, Ohio rose to be one of best high school basketball teams in the country. We're seeing this group of guys going from being unknown to the ultimate hype of the nation. I'm not even the biggest fan of LeBron, but I like this one.

• A great, and greatly tragic story that is told without too much bias when it would be easy to let emotion cloud the truth. A must watch. The film not only captures the story of Benjamin Wilson, but also of a city along with its inherent struggles, and a terrible felling of what if? Wilson, who was considered the best high school basketball player in the country was shot before his senior season of high school basketball. Billy Moore, the young man who fired the shots that killed Wilson, also appears in the film to give what he claimed was the first time he got a chance to tell his side of the story.

• This is the story about one of the most hated teams in the league, Detroit Pistons Bad Boys. For some, the team was heroic -- made up of gritty, hard-nosed players who didn't back down from anyone. And for others, it was exactly that trait -- the willingness to do seemingly anything to win -- that made them the 'Bad Boys,' the team fans loved to hate.

• Highly overlooked documentary about Chris Herren and his struggles. He was a 'can't miss' basketball superstar until drug addiction eventually destroyed his career. With the support of his wife and family, Herren struggles to conquer his demons and reclaim his life.

• The incredible story of the 1992 Lithuanian basketball team, whose athletes struggled under Soviet rule, became symbols of Lithuania's independence movement, and - with help from the Grateful Dead - triumphed at the Barcelona Olympics.

• This documentary follows the lives of two inner-city Chicago boys who struggle to become college basketball players on the road to going professional. We're following William Gates and Arthur Agee, two teenagers who are recruited by a scout from St. Joseph High School, a predominantly white high school. The film raises a number of issues concerning race, social class, economic division, education, and values in the contemporary United States.

• Since the age of nine, Sebastian Telfair has been a well known player on the basketball courts in his hometown of Brooklyn. Now entering his senior year of high school, Sebastian is determined to get his team, the Lincoln Railsplitters, to their third straight PSAL championship title. He is also faced with the decision to either attend The University of Louisville or make the jump from high school to the NBA in order to provide for his family and get them out of the projects of New York City. Telfair's environment also plays a big part in his life. He deals with a death and having the entire neighbourhood depending on him to be next in the line of great New York point guards.

• Sonicsgate tells the story about the Seattle SuperSonics move to Oklahoma City, focusing on the more scandalous corporate and political reasons why the Sonics left Seattle and became the Oklahoma City Thunder in July 2008. This documentary exposes the truth behind how Seattle lost the SuperSonics after a heated legal battle in 2008. The perfect storm of corporate greed and political impotence formed to rob loyal Seattle sports fans of their oldest professional franchise.

• The story behind Julius 'Dr.J' Erving's career in the ABA and NBA including his beginnings in Long Island, N.Y. This documentary goes through The Doc's career in and outside the court, from growing up in Long Island, his days as a streetballer, his college days and the multiple family tragedies. The footage alone is enough to watch this film.

• No Crossover tells a story about a 1993 brawl involving then-high school basketball player and future NBA star Allen Iverson, and how the incident – and the subsequent trial and eventual conviction of Iverson – divided the town of Hampton, Virginia, where Iverson attended Bethel High School. It takes a personal look at how the Iverson incident and the ensuing aftermath highlighted the community's existing racial tension and put the town's problems of race relations front and center in the daily papers.

• This documentary tells the story about the guy who was drafted before Michael Jordan, Len Bias and what happened to the supposed superstar. The story goes through Bias' time at the University of Maryland, how he became a star at college and untimely his death and the impact his hassing had on sports culture. It's a very good documentary told from different point of views, that tells a tragic story about what happened and what could have been.

• This is the story about how Jeremy Lin went from being an undrafted d-league nobody to the star of New York Knicks. Not only were Jeremy having a tough time in the league, it shows him overcoming discouragements and racism and achieving success through his faith and desire.

• In this documentary we take a look at America in the Civil Rights-era in a basketball point of view, at historically black colleges and universities. This is not necessarily a NBA documentary but it's an important film that tells the true struggle. It's a long one but definitely worth it. 2 discs, 224 minutes.

• The 1991 University of Michigan men's basketball recruiting class in which five freshman known as The Fab Five revolutionized college basketball. This film covers the success, cultural changes, scandal, and of course The Timeout. This documentary tells the story about the first freshman starting five give to make it to the NCAA National Championship game, and their impact of the game of basketball, which still can be seen today.

• In 1991 Magic Johnson announces he's retiring from basketball because of HIV. This documentary takes an in depth look at his career, everything from the Hollywood lifestyle and the love of his life. Magic tells the honest story about the days leading up to announcement and what it was like to be in the league afterwards, and how this affected the whole AIDS/HIV community.

• Great documentary that tells the complex story behind the relationship between Vlade Divac (Serbian) and Dražen Petrović (Croatian), two guys who were like brothers until the civil war in Yugoslavia broke out. The story is mostly told from Vlade's side but still seems quite believable. A very touching story that I didn't really knew about until I saw this.

• Documentary that goes behind the stats to reveal the story of Kobe Bryant's career, exploring the mentorships, allies and rivalries that have helped shape his stellar 18-year tenure in the NBA, and offering access to his daily experiences, his lifelong inspirations and the battle with his greatest personal challenge yet.
